STEM 교육단체 ASCENT
안녕하십니까. 저희는 서울, 제주, 베트남 국제학교 학생들이 함께 만든 청소년 주도 비영리 STEM 교육 단체 ASCENT입니다.
Greetings, we are ASCENT, a non-profit organisation led by students from international schools in Seoul, Jeju, and Vietnam.
현재 모든 ASCENT 구성원이 국제학교를 다니고 있지만, 대부분의 구성원은 전에 공립학교를 통해 한국의 초·중등 교육 프로그램을 직접 경험해 보았습니다.
Although all student members of ASCENT are attending international schools at the moment, some of them attended Korean public schools in the past and experienced the programmes they offered.
그렇기에 공립 학교와 본 학교의 교육 시스템을 학생의 입장으로 비교해볼수있었고, 본 학교의 교육 시스템은 공립 교육 시스템과 달리, 다양한 교육 환경에서 직접 실험하고 질문하며 프로젝트를 완성하는 방식으로 가르치고 있습니다.
Thus, they were able to compare the two educational systems from the students’ point of view; they have concluded that, unlike the Korean educational system, the educational system of international schools teach to carry out projects by conducting experiments in diverse environments and posing questions along the process.
실험을 통해 본래 STEM 과목을 즐기지 않았지만, 이러한 학습 프로그램을 통해 STEM 과목에 흥미가 생긴 구성원들도 있습니다.
Through a hands-on and activity-based curriculum, some of our members have shared their opinions on how their interest in STEM subjects increased after experiencing the international school’s educational curriculum.
또한, 본 프로그램이 아이들이 STEM 과목에 더 큰 관심을 가지지 않더라도, 한국 교육 시스템에서 흔히 찾아볼수 있는 주입식 교육이 이런 과목들은 어렵다는 생각의 틀에 갇혀 어린 나이에서부터 본인의 잠재력에 제한을 걸어두는 상황을 만들수도 있다고 생각했습니다.
Furthermore, though this programme may not result in further cultivating young learners’ interests in these subjects, we thought that rote learning, which is commonly found in the Korean educational system, would only cause students to limit their potential by the idea that STEM subjects are difficult from a young age.
이러한 경험은 모든 아이들이 누려야 한다는 생각으로 먼저 주변 유스 센터에 연락하며 첫 레슨을 시작하였습니다.
With the belief that this is an opportunity that all children should have access to, ASCENT first reached out to surrounding youth centres and held our first lesson.
ASCENT가 주목하는 것은 학생들의 재능이 아닌 교육 기회입니다.
Our organisation is founded on the belief that people understand science better by conducting experiments and making observations.
누구나 직접 실험하고 참고할 때 과학을 더 잘 이해할 수 있다고 생각합니다.
Hence, we believe that this educational system is something all children should experience because ASCENT focuses on educational opportunity rather than students’ talents.
ASCENT의 프로젝트 끝엔 아이들이 STEM 과목들을 단순히 어렵고 다가가기 어려운 과목이 아닌, 흥미롭고 쉽게 다가갈 수 있는 과목으로 만드는 게 저희의 목표입니다.
At the end of ASCENT’s projects, we aim to change students’ perception of STEM subjects as interesting and easily approachable instead of subjects that are puzzling and difficult to approach.
현재 ASCENT는 국내외 여러 교육기관과 협력하여 체험형 STEM 교육을 운영하고 있습니다.
Currently, ASCENT is operating hands-on STEM programmes while cooperating with both domestic and international education centres
예를 들면, 파스타 면으로 다리를 만들며 트러스 구조 개념 및 거울 만들기 실험을 통하여 단일 치환 반응과 같은 실험을 통한 다양한 STEM 과목들의 개념을 가르쳐 주고 있습니다.
We teach a variety of concepts in STEM subjects, such as truss structures through building bridges with pasta noodles and single replacement through making mirrors.
학생들의 연령과 환경에 맞춰 이러한 프로그램을 직접 만들고 실험하며 활동 중심의 실험을 진행하고 있습니다. 또한, 모든 학생들에게 공정한 기회를 제공하고자 ASCENT는 현재 수익을 창출하고 있지 않기에, 이번 펀딩이 매우 중요하다는 점을 강조드리고 싶습니다.
We plan our programmes based on students’ ages and environments and conduct hands-on, activity-based experiments. Furthermore, noting the fact that ASCENT does not engage in any monetisation activities to provide equal opportunity to all students, we would like to emphasise the significance of this funding programme.
펀딩모금액 사용계획
이번 모금은 저희 단체를 더 확장시키는 용도가 아닌, 더 많은 학생들에게 더욱 다양한 경험을 꾸준히 시켜 주기 위한 용도로 사용할 예정입니다.
This fund is not for expanding our organisation, but for providing consistent opportunities for a variety of experiences to more students in the world.

The rewards in return for your fund will be various ASCENT goods.
예를 들어, 실험용 고글과 같이 오랜 기간 사용 가능한 준비물도 필요하지만, 실험 키트 및 물풀 같은 비교적 빠른 시일내 닳는 재료들이 학생들 수와 맞게 준비가 되어야하기 때문에 본 모금은 준비물 예산에 들어가게 될것입니다. 후원에 대한 리워드는 다양한 ASCENT 굿즈가 될 것입니다.
Our lessons require both durable resources, such as safety goggles, and consumable materials, including experiment kits and liquid glue. Because these non-durable items must be prepared in quantities that correspond to the number of students participating in each lesson, this fund will be allocated specifically to cover these material costs. The rewards in return for your donation will be a diverse set of ASCENT goods.
